Reverie

Borrow from my Bookshelf

May 27, 2015

I devour books. It’s what I do.

It’s what I’ve always done since I grew up with two older brothers who loved Mortal Kombat more than colouring and while my Mum worked exhausting night shifts.

I didn’t realize until I got older how growing up in a “single parent” household with only brothers to spend time with would shape my love for literature. So for that, and for a thousand other things, I will forever be grateful.

But the reality is that while the boys were watching scary movies and practicing their slap shots, I was in a world of my own zipping through Archie Comics, rereading chapters of the Babysitters Club and thoroughly enjoying my many years at Hogwarts.

Not surprisingly then, one of my favourite places to spend time and money is in a book shop but whenever I’m there, I always feel frustrated that I don’t have a closer friend than “Heather” to recommend one for me. So I thought that maybe I could help you – get past that feeling of frustration – and straight into the story.

Here are five buzzed about books that you can buy right now and that I couldn’t put down:

Mr. Pernumba’s 24 Hour Bookstore
 by Robin Sloan
– a geeky adventure into a secret world of ancient cults and stealing books

The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins
– a can’t-put-down suburban thriller where characters are more closely connected than they seem

The Promise of a Pencil by Adam Braun
– one young entrepreneurs bold decision to quit corporate america and build schools instead

The Nightingale by Kristin Hanna
– a five hundred page story of two sisters survival during occupied France in WW2

North of Normal by Cea Sunrise Person
– an honest and descriptive memoir about one woman’s childhood growing up in the Canadian wild and her longing to be “normal”

and here are a five more beloved books that I always pick up again:

The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak
– words can’t explain how much I adore this book so if you absolutely hate it, then we probably can’t be friends

Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts
– an epic adventure and unbelievable tale, this novel’s a backpackers best friend and will make you want to get up and GO!

The Messenger by Marcus Zusak
– a thoughtfully written story about waking up to mediocracy and pursuing a meaningful life.

Tiny Beautiful Things by Cheryl Strayed
– an always honest and often hilarious dose of life advice from Dear Sugar
“let yourself be gutted. let it open you. start here.” – Sugar

Marching Powder by Rusty Young
– a fascinating look at the corruption and sociology of prisons in Bolivia, described from the eyes of an English inmate
