Birthdays, Part 2

July 2, 2015

The world is full of so many tiny beautiful things.

I woke up this morning to pretty pink lilies, blooming in my room and phone calls from all of my favourite people. The sun is shining, I haven’t stopped smiling and for my old soul my birthday is always a day to reflect on how far I’ve come and how far I want to go.

I had a moment a few weeks ago when I realized that my birthday was on it’s way and that I was no where closer to achieving the things that I’m striving for. It’s now a year later and still, I haven’t landed my dream job or met someone who would sweep me off my feet. I have even less money then before, actually. Things were looking grim.

But after a few days of moping about, I woke up one morning and cranked up Taylor Swift’s song, “Shake it Off” and began to feel much better. I literally gave my head a shake and looked at the world around me. At my lovely life, the one that is full of so many tiny beautiful things.

Today’s the day that I count my blessings for all of the wonderful people that fill up my world with laughter and love. And while I got momentarily caught up in thinking about the big picture, I entirely forgot the small. This year, I’ve built and maintained so many great friendships. I started my first day job. I hosted our kits family christmas and even had a christmas tree named Bernard. I’ve put a lot of love into creating this blog, and a lot of heart into pursuing writing. I am, actually, getting closer and closer to my dreams every day and yet I punished myself for no reason by believing that I wasn’t.

My hope for you is that you learn from my foolishness and remember not to get caught up in the big picture; but to appreciate the small. I also encourage you to celebrate your birthdays! instead of letting them go by quietly. Because birthday’s are a time to be grateful for the many years that you’ve lived, and not worried about the scary number on your cake.

Our birthdays are a time to celebrate – all of the tiny beautiful things.

They are the building blocks of your future.  You just can’t see it yet.
